Class of 2001 Ten Year Reunion

On August 13, 2011 the class of 2001 came together to reminisce about daysgone by and to catch up on just how much we have accomplished in the 10 yearssince graduation. The reunion was heldat The Beach Club Bar and Sports Grill, and it was a perfect night for catchingup. Food, fun, and good times were hadby all. The class of 2001 was always s aunified class from diverse backgrounds and that has not changed. Our diversity was, and is our strength. As aclass we are comprised of a fine group of individuals that have done well forthemselves. We have gone on to becometeachers, engineers, lawyers, homemakers, parents, nurses, and doctors; ourcareer paths and life choices are as endless as our passion to succeed. While planning the 10 year reunion for theclass of 2001, it was important to keep in mind all of the benefits we receivedfrom St. Anthony. Realizing that we weregiven a unique opportunity as well as a strong foundation, we wanted to givesomething back. We took a collection throughout the evening to raise money forthe new lunch tables at the school. Wewere very proud to raise over $1000 dollars, enough to purchase a new table forthe school. While our contributions areminimal compared to many of our fellow alumni, we wanted to send a message thatwe care about the future of our school. We had a great time and we were proud of being able to give back to ourbeloved alma mater. Thank you St.Anthony – we look forward to another great decade.

. . .the bad guys must recognize they get most of their effect from catastrophic kills, so not much point in smaller detonations. so, bigger IEDs. not much to do about that either but hope the engineers have done a good job clearing routes. so, couple days ago went out (obviously, no IEDs, catastrophic, vehicle borne, or otherwise) to look over the construction site for the new Nursing and Midwifery Institute, almost $3 million project. (and went around to three mosques and another project, quite a tour of the town, that's where i took the photos of the children etc.) thank God it wasn't too hot, but i will not miss wearing the body armor when i'm done with it. Last week we got a sneak viewing of “Restrepo,” a documentary that national geographic sponsored or somehow got us a copy of… I can recommend it. It’s not gory or shocking so anyone can watch it (it’s supposed to be in theaters back home soon if not already there). It does give an unvarnished look at a US rifle company in 2007 in the Korengal valley up northeast of here near the Pakistani border of course. Without explicit violence it manages to convey the circumstances that clearly have left many of the soldiers with ptsd. It also shows the difficulties that infantry soldiers, even officers (maybe especially officers) have in fighting an insurgency.

You can see that their training, which is basically to kill people and blow stuff up, and temperament, which tends to be aggressive, are essential to their survival, but not necessarily the best skill set with which to thrive in a COIN environment. They could have used some more civil affairs assets… the whole country could use more civil affairs assets. I’m ambivalent about leaving, much more so than in past deployments. Not dealing with detainees was a break, and the mission of the unit I’ve been in these last months is one I can muster enthusiasm for. I wouldn’t mind coming back here to be with them if I could swing it, they’re really a great bunch.

It’s day-to-day when we’ll leave here and fly to Kuwait. I doubt that anything particularly interesting will occur between now and then or while I’m in Kuwait, so this may be the last note from me for this deployment. Then again, I may find myself bored to tears for days waiting for a plane in Kuwait and the muse may strike. If you don’t hear from me, thanks for all the support and emails, I have loved getting them.

On Monday, June 21, 2010, the 27th Annual Msgr. Gualderon Golf Classic Committee, headed by Jim Sherrin '86, Chairman, produced another memorable SAHS memory and successful event, raising $50,000 for SAHS Athletic Programs.

Kudos to everyone who helped make this tournament a rousing success: Gina Maguire, President, Mike Schabert, Principal, Liz Brennan, Director of Development, Brian Walsh, Athletic Director, Awesome Alumni, St. Anthony High School Foundation, SAHS Advisory Board, Super Saints' Parents & Students, Golfers, Auction & Raffle Donors, Dinner Guests, Recreation Park Staff, Di Piazzas (pleasin' pizza), Big Red Bus, Legends (succulent pork sliders), Joe Josts (perfect pickled eggs), and ALL who provided ongoing assistance and sustenance throughout the day. From dawn to dusk, heard nothing but wonderful comments from all who participated, enthusiastically enjoying everything including the smooth sounds of Phil Carillo '84 and his Steelparade Band.

Enthusiastic "Let's Ride" Saints and friends raised $7,000 on this raffle. Special thanks to Mike Lamp & Kevin Lamp for their involvement in spearheading this special feature. Frank Kaspar '47 forwarded an email from Richard Gabriel '46, who shared thoughts on SAINTS early GREATS!

Bob Gillette just emailed me the Alumni News and Views. It's a good source of information and whoever is contributing deserves a lot of credit. I'm glad you are still supporting the Alma Mater.

One thing I noticed about the Hall of Fame and the Sports Hall of Fame is that there are few members of these august groups from the classes prior to 1947. I would like to suggest that someone review the achievements of students who attended in the earlier days.

I know the basketball team in 1942 won the Catholic Team Tournament against Loyola, Cathedral, and Mount Carmel--high school powerhouses in those days. Gene Long and Jack Gabriel were the stars of that team. I think that was the first significant achievement by a St. Anthony's athletic team. I think Jack made All Tournament in every tournament the team entered.

If my memory serves me well, in my class, 1946, Jim Naughton and Buddy Apperson both were honored with All Catholic League honors in either football or basketball; the first athletes from St. Anthony so honored. Plus, we all deserve credit for training members of the teams of the next three years such as Cheatham, Berberet, Olszewski, et al.

The Army interrupted their college years, but Jack Gabriel got a basketball scholarship to Loyola U. and played a lot as a Freshman until he entered service (he served as a fighter pilot in Europe and, after his discharge, restarted college but got called back into the Air F0rce during Korea and by the time he got back from Japan had four kids and stayed in the service.)

Gene Long went to Notre Dame but couldn't play because of a heart condition; after graduating from college he became an attorney and eventually a judge. Buddy Apperson got a football scholarship to USC until the draft interrupted; when he returned he went to Cal State LA where he played for several years. Jim Naughton went to College of Emporia and played football and led the nation in yards gained by a back until injured in his senior year.

There may be others worthy of being honored, and the above is based on my 81-year old memory so needs to be checked. The primary purpose of my note is to get some school historian to review the early years to see if there aren't some attendees who are worthy of being honored. Most, if not all, are probably gone on to their heavenly rewards now so they probably don't care, but historical accuracy (and their families) should be served.

I now live in San Juan Capistrano and don't get to Long Beach very often but remember fondly the 55 or so years we lived there, especially, the years at St. Anthony's.

That was a great blog. Congratulations. I would like to mention 2 things.

1. My very good friend, George Hainley, went on to Cal Berkeley, on scholarship, with the others. George has been credited with being extremely instrumental in the winning of the CIF Championship game against Santa Barbara after he went into the game for John O. after John's injury in the first play of the game.

George passed away several years ago and his memory and legacy should be honored. (Incidentally, Rudy Gonzales and I worked for George's dad at his gas station on PCH and Clark when we were in college.) Fantastic family.

1. In the list of the deceased Saints, which I realize is extremely difficult to compile, the name of one of my very dearest friends, Connie Bisnar, was omitted.

The B. I. Mais Legendary Saints Athletic Fund

In December 2007, a legendary Saint, B. I. (Bill) Mais, Class of 1949, former St. Anthony's quarterback and CIF champion--who went on to play at the University of California Berkeley with three of his legendary Saints teammates, Johnny Olszewski, Dean O'Hare, and John Peterson--decided to make a lead gift to St. Anthony High School to kick-off the renovation of athletic facilities, with the gymnasium as the first priority. B. I. Mais, is not only a member of St. Anthony High School's Hall of Fame, most importantly, he exemplifies all that is good about a St. Anthony SAINT!

The B. I. Mais Legendary Saints Athletic Fund is designed to provide the funding necessary for these repairs, and more. Our goal is to generate sufficient revenue to enable us to begin this remodeling of our gymnasium during the summer of 2008. This would be just in time to welcome our SAINTS back to school next fall.

Over the years, once this initial gymnasium project is complete, this fund will continue to support major athletic facility renovations at St. Anthony High School, including the redesign and rebuilding of our athletic complex at Clark Field.
